Graduate Programs

This collection of web pages is your introduction to the Computer Science graduate program at the University of Idaho. There are many exciting opportunities awaiting you in your computer science studies. Within these pages, we have tried to summarize everything you might need to know, but sometimes procedures, forms and costs change and so it would be a good idea to double check all university items at their official source. In addition to these web pages, you should also visit and read the web pages of the College of Graduate Studies, the Admissions Office, and the Registrar's Office. Many of our graduate courses are made availabe to off-campus students through the facilities of Engineering Outreach.

The University of Idaho is the state's land grant institution and chief center for research and graduate education. It is a learning community of nine colleges. An enrollment of over 10,000 students represents all 50 states and 45 foreign countries. At the University of Idaho, all graduate programs are administratively located within the College of Graduate Studies. Through the College of Graduate Studies, the Department of Computer Science offers graduate courses of study leading to the Master of Science (MSCS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Computer Science. Embodied in a graduate program is the opportunity and responsibility to conduct research leading to new knowledge or the application of existing knowledge in new and novel ways. The following is a representative list of areas in which are faculty are actively researching:

Information Assurance • Games and Virtual Environments • Embedded Systems • Distributed & Network Computing • Fault Tolerant Systems • Artificial Intelligence • Evolutionary Computing • Computer Architecture • Software Engineering • Bioinformatics

Enrollments in the department's graduate programs are large enough to make possible the vital interchange of ideas among students and between students and faculty that is necessary in graduate programs, and yet enrollments are sufficiently small to permit close faculty-student relationships. Interdepartmental cooperation is an important factor on the Idaho campus.

Although conducting research is important, it will have little value unless the results of our work is disseminated through high quality scientific publications. As an integral part of our graduate student mentoring we strive to engage our students in our research activities and in the publication process. The University's "hometown" is Moscow, Idaho, a community of about 18,000 located in the northern Idaho panhandle. Fields of farmland offering a palette of colors that change with the season surround Moscow. Moscow's location offers easy access to northern Idaho's mountains, lakes, and rivers and to the recreation they support. The campus itself is distinctly beautiful with its tree-lined walks and ivy-clad buildings nestled in the picturesque Palouse Hills. It also offers cultural and recreational activities from the world-class Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, art galleries, movie theaters, live theater and music performances to NCAA Division I-A athletics, an 18-hole golf course, and nearby skiing, hiking, and camping.
